People often mistakenly think confront means fight, argue, defend, force etc., when in reality it means ' to face squarely '. Most of us probably grew up with the idea that disagreement is 'bad' and we should try to avoid conflict. Non-confronters often fear the risk of anger, rejection, tension and so on and have a strong need to appear 'nice' at all times. Yet not confronting leads to two traps: avoiding conflict resolution on one hand and moving towards premature solutions on the the other.

HOW TO CONFRONT

* Acknowledge the other's opinion as legitimate.

* Differentiate the other's opinion from yours: You're saying............, and on the other hand, I'm saying.............

* Keep your emotions in check.Accept the other's feelings and be responsible for your own. It's unreasonable to blame another for what's going on inside us.

* Treat confronting as a rational exercise. It requires calmness and patience in the presence of strong feelings.

* Don't problem solve until both differences are fully in the open and understood by both.

There is a verbal clue that conflict is about to escalate without sufficient exploration of differences. That clue is the word 'but'. It has no place in successful confronting.

DON'T DO THESE:

* Make Yes.....but....... statements

* Say, I hear you. (period). If you truly hear someone you'll be able to rephrase what they said to their satisfaction.

* Diminish differences i.e. we're not really far apart on this - when you actually are - it's insulting and patronising.
