To help people deal with poor performance, whatever the context.

1. Pick an example of a past event where you didn't perform at the level you would normally expect.

2. What were your thoughts and self talk in the days leading up to and the day of the event?

3. What imagery was in your mind before the event?

4. What was the nature of your self talk and thoughts right before the event?

5. Did you have any performance expectations for the event? What were the key pressures?

6. What thoughts and self talk did you have during the event itself?

7. When you made mistakes, what did you think and say to yourself?

8. What were your thoughts and self talk after the event? What impact has this had on your view of your own abilities?

This process allows you to cut through feeling sorry for yourself and/or blaming others, in order to get to specific behaviours you displayed that hindered your performance.

Future postings will deal with putting more useful behaviours in place to help overcome obstacles and improve performance.
