Book Review - Mindset

This book can be used as part of the early self awareness work covered in recent postings and provides a powerful framework for moving forward.

This is one of the most popular books currently available regarding fulfilling potential and, having worked through it, it is easy to see why.

It's central theme is that people tend to operate from one of two mindsets. The first is defined as a fixed mindset, which is based on self validation, demonstrating being right, believing that intelligence is a fixed trait, as are other skills and qualities, therefore life is also fixed so it is best to play safe and avoid risks and if anything goes wrong blame others.

The second is a growth mindset in which any aspect of life is an opportunity to learn and develop. Superficially this can seem a little ' Mary Poppins ', however it is well validated in pyschological research abd Dr Dweck offers numerous examples and pieces of research to support her points.

Dr Dweck covers the impact of the two mindsets in achieving success across a number of different fields, such as business, parenting, education, relationships with a large number of sporting examples as well. In addition she makes some really strong points regarding the key issues of ' natural ability ', character, dealing with change, groupthink and the use of positive and negative labels.

The book makes you look at yourself and those around you in a fresh and more purposeful way and is highly recommended as a ' must read ' for anyone interested in achieving their own potential and helping others do so as well.
