Review of Sri Lanka v England in Galle

It was fascinating to be there to see the First Test and to observe how England learnt the lessons from this defeat to turn the series around in Columbo in the Second Test.

As a spectator the first comments to make are regarding the crowds. The Barmy Army were the quietist i have ever heard them, this may have been because many of them, quite rightly, refused to pay the exorbitant prices and watched from the ramparts of the Fort overlooking the ground. Also the Sri Lanka authorities let in lots of schoolchildren in order to pump up the atmosphere, which worked brilliantly as the atmosphere was fantastic.

Most of the lessons to emerge for England were pretty obvious i.e. appropriate shot selection, being patient in order to build an innings ( a la Jayawardena, which was a fabulous innings in the context of the game ), creating pressure by clever use of bowling and fielding changes, holding catches etc.

From the stands the observations ref England are as follows :- the mood and morale of the team was extremely good, except when catches were going down. There seemed, on the pitch, sometimes to be drifts in concentration and mutual support and waiting for something to happen, rather than trying to make something happen. A plus was also the way the players made themselves open to the fans.

It was brilliant that England applied the lessons to win the Second Test and retain their number one ranking. Looking ahead one of the key issues will be who to select and how to integrate them into the current squad and ethos. As part of this the key challenge will be to keep on winning while at the same time re-inventing the squad. This will require keeping the best of the current culture while, at the same time adapting it to bring out the best in the newer players and letting them develop their own stake in moving England forward.

Roll on South Africa!!!
